The Class

Video captures and reconstructs images over time to represent moments in life. SMASH Video seeks to explore the uses of this time-based medium and capture moments in the lives of SMASH scholars. These moments will be reconstructed to depict the world as seen through the eyes of an underrepresented high school student.
SMASH Video producers will experiment with inexpensive video cameras and popular new media tools to create short videos about their experiences as SMASH students. These videos will be shared publicly on this site and other popular video sharing sites so that they can be viewed by the rest of the world.
The class is lead by Trevor Parham & Simon Robertson, two Bay Area born creative entrepreneurs, who teach a group of 22 SMASH students from various high schools around the San Francisco Bay Area. Equipped with the experience they’ve used to further their own professional & artistic careers, the two instructors will guide the class through an array of engaging and educational activities. From blogging to storyboarding, shooting to editing, these students will have the opportunity to satisfy their curiosity with their imagination.
All of the projects produced in this class will be showcased and archived on the SMASH Video website. Not only will students use this website as a platform to showcase their work to others, but they will also use the class blog to cultivate an online virtual community, where they can discuss their discoveries with their peers and any other interested onlookers.
By the end of this course, students are expected to have a heightened sense of familiarity with video production software, and the experience of exposing their creative impulses with hundreds and thousands of viewers. This summer course only lasts five weeks, but students will be encouraged to continue producing videos throughout the academic school year and beyond.
