Well, my name is Karina Diaz, and that's it, no middle name, no hyphens just me. :) I am a third year SMASH (Summer Math and Science Honors Academy) scholar, and go to Capuchino High School in San Bruno. I'm sixteen years old, and love to edit film. I started doing so this school year, and learned to use Final Cut Pro as well as Imovie. I definitely prefer Final Cut Pro. I have been through a lot of the filming process, from contracting actors, to being behind the cameras actually shooting, to directing, to setting up the lights, and finally editing through the shots. I have even written my own short films. I still have trouble at times coming up with a score for the film, but everything works out in the end.

PSA: Change the Stats

July 24th, 2008

The point of our PSA is to raise awareness of the very low numbers of ethnicities other than white that work and have a bachelors or higher. It is also meant to help motivate these people to act against the statistics and work to go to college and get a degree. It has a simple format in which we asked several people of various backgrounds to say the one simple sentence which is only changed to accomodate the number and the group of people it belongs to. We then incorporated the bodies of people of different ethnicities actually protraying the numbers. We focused the PSA by using only one sentence and using mostly teenagers who are or have the possibility of going to college. The audience is people of color who are on the way through school to college. This PSA is effective through good music that teenagers can relate to as well as the use of teenagers actually saying the statistics and asking for a change in them.

During the project, I helped film a bit of the numbers as well as recruiting and filming the African American students. I also created the titles and text for the film. I also helped with a bit of the sound problems during the edit.

If I had more time I probably would have helped more with the filming portion as well as with the editing.

Two Guys, One Sandwich

July 17th, 2008

Once Vivian got the idea to create a movie about to guys fighting for a sandwich, I immediately thought of Jose and Joseph to play the roles. Thankfully they agreed.

The decisions made for the edit were really based on keeping all shots quick and entertaining, building up momentum to the final outcome.

We hope you enjoy. We definitely had fun filming, especially the chase scenes. It is funny and highly recommended.

Karina Diaz Documentary

July 10th, 2008

I chose to do my presentation on Fourth of july because it seemed appropriate for the occasion because I was filming over fourth of july weekend.

Also, I know that most people’s idea of what is celebrated on the fourth of july is false. It is said that we celebrate this day in July beasue that was when we gained independence from Great Britain, but that is not so. Creating this documentary I am able to inform others while providing a slightly humorous way to do so.

Karina Diaz Outline for Silent Movie

July 10th, 2008

I am planning to work with vivian during the production portion of the film, and will then take the footage and create my own edit of the story.

What we want to do is create somewhat of a recycling commercial using two very contrasting people. One would be somewhat of an angel where we see how there room is very clean and orderly.

The other person has a very messy room with clothes, papers, books, and garbage are all over the place. She would be seen much like the devil.

we want to show the devil in a woodsy or nature like area, having just eaten some chips and drinken a soda, and then show the angel walking through a similar looking area having just finished a bottle of water. We see the angel walk towards a recycling bin and tossing it in, and then see the devil just throw her garbage in the grass. The angel will see this and walk towards the devil, and make the devil pick up its garbage and put it in the correct receptacles.

Assignment 2: Documentary

July 2nd, 2008

For the Documentary, I have decided to create a film that would talk about July 4 and how it is celebrated by a typical family in the Bay Area. I am hoping to have a few interviews from family members to have them say what they feel fourth of July stands for, why we celebrate it, and how it is celebrated. I am also going to get some facts about fourth of July in order to make sure that the real facts are revealed to the viewers.

I am hoping to add a humorous aspect to the film, with questions such as when is fourth of July celebrated, and if other countries have a fourth of July.

Some b-roll I am thinking about is filming the barbecues, shots of the different fireworks, and pictures of the people that made fourth of July possible.

Assignment 1

To me, laughter is a way to help someone feel better. As such, I love comedy, especially in movies. That is the reason I decided to create a film that would make people laugh. The first thing I did was to change the speed in Vivian’s first clip, where she introduces herself, but that was only to have it fit in well with Joseph’s and my introductions. Once I heard it, I realized that Vivian’s voice changed drastically but could still be understood and was really funny, so I slowed down all of Vivian’s clips.

From there I decided to speed up where I spoke, especially because I do not like to hear my voice or to have to stare at a camera.

For Joseph I found a funny facial expression that i repeated before and/or after he spoke.

In the background, I decided to place a nice up-beat song to express the light feel of the film
