Hey Everyone, it's summer again and now I'm in Avanced Tech. A lot of things happened since last summer. But first, my name is Juan Del Toro, I attend Pinole Valley High School, I'm in class of '09 (GO SENIORS!), and I'm a 2nd/3rd year SMASH Scholar. I was born in Jalisco, Mexico and I moved into Richmond, CA which is where I was raised and where I still live in today. During this past school year, I've been in a couple of club elections and it's a killer to be waiting for someone to announce who won the position. From this, I've became President of Latinos Unidos and President of Amnesty International. This past year has also been throwing 1120lb weights at me, because I needed to manage my time between my school work, my activities, and my job. Ever since a long time, I've been working for WM Cleaning as a janitor in Richmond. I'm very proud of the activities I've done, because I'm coming to this SMASH summer representing not only myself and my family, but also the Latino community at school and at Richmond. I'm glad that I'm in Advanced Tech, because I've always had an interest in making short videos. I really do hope to learn how to use the split screen technique that directors use to convert people into twins. Hopefully I can record myself having a twin.

PSA: Raising the Rates

July 24th, 2008

Hi Everyone,

I’m Juan Del Toro and here is my video, “Raising the Rates.” In this video, I’m showing the percentages of Latinos attending college and how motivation could help make a positive affect on these percentages. For this video, I asked a number of students to write down facts of the percentages of Latinos in college. (Special thanks to the people who made this video possible.)

My message is to inform the public of how motivation would be able to make a positive change in the Latino community. My audience is the world, because motivation should be given to everyone in order to make a positive affect on what you believe in. I spent at most two hours or less on making this video. If I had more time, I would have added in more people writing down the opportunities that are offered to Latinos and on how “spreading the word” about these opportunities, along with motivation, could also make a positive affect in the rates of Latinos attending college.

I hope you enjoy,

Juan Del Toro

Raising the Rates

July 22nd, 2008

Hi Everyone,
For my PSA, I’m demonstrating the problem of the lack of Latinos attending college. This is also hurting our community in the Bay Area, because twenty-five percent of Latinos, in the Bay Area, fail in graduating from high school, said by the San Francisco Chronicle recently.
Along with talking about the issue, we will also be working on a solution that is to increase awareness among the Latino youth. We want the viewers to stand up and show the opportunities that are being offered to Latinos.
With Latinos being the growing population in the U.S. and if the population keeps on increasing as it is today, by the year 2025, Latino teenagers will make up 1/4 of the teen population. By increasing awareness among the Latino youth, our cause would make a positive impact on the U.S.
There would be cards, signs, and people writing saying…

  • Did you know…
  • 22% of Latinos attend college
  • 35% of Latinos in college drop out of college
  • Even here, in the Bay Area, 25% of Latinos fail to graduate from high school
  • What could we do to help?

(The rest of the cards are still in progress.)

You are always welcome to leave me a comment on my PSA.

     I hope you enjoy,
                        Juan Del Toro

I Poisoned My Twin

July 18th, 2008

Hi Everyone,
I’m Juan Del Toro and here is my video, “I Poisoned My Twin”. In this video, I worked on a split screen feature. This video is still in the “fixing” process, because the ending is not as smooth as it should. I hope you enjoy the video.

Thank you,
Juan

The Drama, The Murder, Or The Song

July 8th, 2008

Hey Everyone,

For Assignment #3, I’m still choosing my options because there are “holes” on each idea that I came up with. So far I gave myself three options:

  1. I would make a silent movie. In that silent movie, I would take the role of a depressed character who just found out that he was dumped by his girlfriend.
  2. I would make a silent movie. I would make a small murder scenario at the Foothill Dorms. I would be playing the role as the person who’s been murdered. I will also try to split the screen, so I could also be the murderer. I would play the parts of twins, where one poisons the other and the reason to why the twin murders his twin is still being determined.
  3. I would make a  music video. (This video would have the least chance of the three due to the lack of time that I would have to work on it.) On this video, I would be remixing the music video of Goapele – Closer.
I really hope that all of you enjoy my ideas, and I’m welcoming advice to what you have in mind. If you would like to be a “guest-star” on my video, you are always welcome.
     Thank you,
                 Juan Del Toro

A Change Worth Making

July 1st, 2008

Hi Everyone,

On this post I plan to talk about what my plans are for Assignment #2. In my movie, which is currently in the making, is about how and what I do to help out the Latino community at my high school. Did you know..

  • 22 percent of Latinos attend college
  • 35 percent of Latinos drop out of college
  • 51 percent of Latinas get pregnant before the age of 19, which creates an obstacle for them to attend college
At Pinole Valley High School, for the upcoming school year, I’m having Latinos Unidos to offer it’s members the opportunity of attending college fairs. I’m working with another club, African American Student Union, and with my guidance counselor to secure that this plan becomes a reality. In my video, I will also be showing my everyday life and how what I do goes against stereotypes. My everyday goal is to positively make a change in the percentage of Latinos attend college and to change stereotype comments.
I’m still unsure of what specifically I’m working on, but I welcome people’s comments.

SMASH in Youtube!

July 1st, 2008

Hi everyone, it’s Juan, and here’s my footage on recent interviews with SMASH scholars. My interview guests were asked questions on what are their favorite youtube videos and how youtube will benefit the SMASH students. Currently, my video is still be in the “making.” So far, I’ve put in slides and I’ve placed video transitions between each slide. I also posted a small piece of the music video of “Return of the Mac,” by Mark Morrison. I hope you all enjoy.
